Offering numerous benefits, Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV), doesn’t taste good. Due to the distasteful flavor of this vinegar, ACV tablets were made to simplify the intake process. These tablets are still acidic and are to be taken as medicines.
Consuming more amount of these tablets does more harm than good, it can also cause serious side effects to your body. Yet, there are no sufficient research done on the side effects of apple cider vinegar tablets.
Side effects of ACV tablets
Burns and irritation
Undiluted ACV may result in burns and irritation in the mouth, esophagus as well as throat or it may also cause stomach upset, tooth enamel erosion, ulcer irritation etcetera. Medicine Interactions
Apple cider vinegar tablets may cause unpleasant effects when combined with several medications. Arthur Schoenstadt, M.D., and Kristi Monson, PharmD., report that insulin, furosemide, torsemide, digoxin, diuretics and bumetanide may harmfully interact with the tablets. [2] Apple cider vinegar may react with medicines for diabetes and heart disease as well, so consult the doctor before consuming the tablets.
Increases acid in your system
If you have gastroparesis problem with diabetes that slows down stomach emptying, then be alert to ACV tablets since it may put in more problems. Taking the vinegar, even diluted in water can increase acid in your body, which may harm your kidneys and bones, shares Michael Dansinger, MD, director of Tufts University’s diabetes lifestyle coaching program. [3] ACV tablets may give several side effects such as throat irritation and heartburn. The University Of Arkansas Department Of Human Environmental Science researched on esophageal injury after consuming 8 apple cider vinegar tablets.[4]
Decrease in potassium level
According to eMedTV, the active elements found in the cider vinegar tablets might decrease the amount of potassium in the bloodstream. Less potassium level in your blood may cause hypokalemia which may further cause several health issues like – constipation, abnormal heart rhythm, muscle weakness and fatigue.
Sore throat
The strong acid in the vinegar can cause irritation in the throat making it painful. This usually happens if you drink the vinegar with low amount of water. To avoid these problems, we need to make sure that we dilute the vinegar with large amount of water. Similarly, if you are thinking of taking ACV tablets, consume them with a lot of water. [5]
Dosage to consume to prevent side effects
The University of Arkansas suggests consuming 300 mg to 500 mg apple cider vinegar tablets three times a day. But, a number of brands may have diverse quantity of acetic acid than is revealed on their packaging which may burn up your throat or cause ulcers. [6]
